I made these balloon sculptures and give them away to the kids in the kampong near to my guesthouse. | ||

Meeting New Friends 12/10/08
|
在教会里认识了两位新朋友，一位来自苏岛，名叫Dede，在两所大学分别修读资讯和经济学位，目前已进入最后一年，是一位很有人情味的年轻人。另一位来自中国安徽，名叫张明，和Dede在 同一所大学进修印尼语。 星期天参加完礼拜后，他们 到我的宿舍来吃早餐。我也用一点时间和张明一起看圣经。自从认识了他们之后，星期日的生活比较有情趣。 |

Buka Puasa 21/9/08

这次的开斋聚餐是在一位同事Ibu Maryam的家举行。这是我第二次到她家。上一次是私人的邀请，这次则是整个部门受邀。 |

傍晚5点15分左右，部门主任先致辞，然后另一名同事作短进。 | ||
 |
大约傍晚5时45分，附近的回教堂发出了祷告的呼吁，大伙儿便开斋了。 |
||
 |
开斋的序幕一般上是吃甜品如枣和喝甜饮料。 女主人为我们预备了开斋的传统饮料Kolak--一种类似Chendo的 椰浆饮料，里头有香蕉切片。味道不错。 |
||
 |
之后，男同事们得到附近的清真寺做祷告，然后才回来用餐，女性则可开始享用晚餐。一般社交聚会，男女分开席地而坐。 |
||
 |
回家路上，途径我宿舍附近的邻里清真寺，已经接近晚上8点了，祷告还未结束。身穿白袍的女性全都在外院。 |
||
 |
饱餐一顿后，我收到了一份特别的礼物。原来一位同事的孩子不久前刚接受割礼，按他们的风俗，凡参加割礼‘联欢会’的客人都会得到一份礼物。 |
||
 |
标签上的文字大意是说，感谢上苍赐予孩子，愿他将来为宗教、社会和国家所用。原来割礼还有奉献的含义，难怪他们要大事庆祝一番。 |

Buka Puasa With

Buka Puasa seems to be a time for social gatherings. People take this opportunity to catch up with each other by gathering for dinner in the evening when they break fast. It can be held either at home or in a restaurant. |
||
 |
Usually when the call-to-worship is heard, people break the fast by taking a sweet beverage, after that the men will go for their Sorat (Prayer) and then come back to start the dinner. | ||
 |

Visiting Mr Kees
14/9 (Sunday)

Mr Kees's house is situated at the south east of Jogja city, about 8km away from my guesthouse. They rented this house because they wanted to have a quiet environment and also to be nearer to the university where Wendy works in as her university doesn't provide her with transport (To know more about Mr Kees, go to Sharing My Thoughts scroll to the bottom of the page). This is the road outside his house. There is a bus-stop in front. | ||

Outing With
Students

My first outing with students They brought to Alun-alun Selatan, the field in the south of the Kraton. There are 2 such fields, one in the north and one in the south. | ||
|
Alun-alun used to be the Sultan's military parade ground, now has becomed a popular spot for the locals in the evening, especially weekends. | ||
|

|
We played the popular game called 'Masangin'. The player is supposed to make a wish before the game. If he is able to pass through the 2 ficus trees starting at the edge of the field with his eyes blind folded will have his wish come true. | ||
|
The distance is about 50 meters. | ||
|
Remove the handkerchief and see where did I ended up in. I made a round about the first time and managed to belly pass through the 2 trees on 2nd attempt, but still hit the concrete surrounding the tree. | ||
|

After the game, we proceeded to the castle gate just 100m away from the Alun-alun selatan. | ||
 |

This gate is in line with Mt. Merapi in the north, the northern gate, the Kraton and they form a imaginary straight line which goes all the way to the southern beach. | ||

Home Gathering
30/8 (Saturday)

Ibu Mayram, one of the staff at the Language Training Centre invited us to her place on Saturday evening 30/8 (2 days before the start of fasting month). It took me about 35mins to reach her place by bicycle. | ||

Ibu Maryam deliberately prepare Lutis for me to try because I have not tasted it so far. This is a dessert dish like Rojak, but sauce (sambal, asam etc) without peanuts is placed separately for dipping. The colleagues were preparing it in front of the house. | ||
 |
Some other snacks were served too. | ||
 |
A sit-down dinner. White rice, Tom yam & Sates were served besides Lutis. Simple and practical. | ||

Invitation to Solo
23/8 (Saturday)
|
A mission secondary school (Gereja Kristen Kalam Kudus SMP) in Solo that I visited on 23 Aug 08. I was invited to be one of the judges for their Inter-Schools Chinese Oratorical Competition. It was opened to all schools in Solo. There were 258 participants from 35 schools, with age ranging from those in play group, right up to those in the Pre-U level.

Souvenir for the judges. All the judges were from various cities outside Solo, e.g. Jogja, Semarang, Saratica. I was very impressed by the generosity and caring act of the organisers. |

Met New Friends

Met some new friends - Agus (final year students in UMY, speaks Mandarin) & Shanjiang (Agus's friend), a Chinese from Xinjiang China learning Arabic in UMY. |

Batik Course
12/7 (Saturday)
|
My first educational experience - A one-day Batik course on 12 Jul . It took me 45mins of cycling to get to the place. |
||

The most important part of the lesson - learning how to use the canting to drip the wax onto the cloth. |

Apply another layer of paraffin and apply black. Crush the wax to create the cracks and dip into yellow & brown to get the cracks visible. |
